The building is organized into areas delineated by their
functions: public activities, private or confidential business, and high
security areas. The building includes state of the art technology for
security and communications. The site is located along a pedestrian route between
elderly housing and the downtown area. Benches, walks and park-like
amenities make the route pleasant and safe.
The building is a combined fire and police facility.
It is a two story
masonry building on a 4 acre site.
The first floor includes administration offices for the police and fire
departments. The police side includes patrol and operations facilities,
investigation, booking/detention, and a sallyport capable of handling oversized
vehicles (ambulances). Prisoner transfer is managed through an intake space from
either the sallyport or an interior interview room. The fire department space
includes a day room, kitchen, and office spaces. SCBA, a work shop,
decontamination and other support functions flank the apparatus room. The 5 bay
apparatus garage utilizes manufactured steel building construction.
Dispatch and a meeting/emergency operations room are shared by the fire and
police departments.Locker rooms, bunk rooms, and unfinished space for future growth are located
on the second floor. A mezzanine space provides for storage and a fitness area.
2400 square feet of unfinished space is provided to accommodate future
department growth.

The combined facility provides for efficient use of land and economical
construction. The program required that the fire and police departments operate
independently, sharing only the meeting room, the physical building structure
and its mechanical systems. A central dispatch serves all fire and police needs.
It also controls building security and public access.

The South Attleboro facility is a substation that provides for the needs of
the south region of the City. It provides services redundant to those at
headquarters station so that it may function as a headquarters during major
renovations of the headquarters station planned for the future. The low bid for
this project was below the target budget.
The Carell Group provided construction administration services
that included weekly site meetings, review and approval of shop drawings, and
certification of contractor’s payment requisitions.
